Why I Created a Specialised C-Section Recovery Programme

As a physiotherapist, therapeutic coach, and mum, I’ve walked the path of C-section recovery—not once, but twice. My personal and professional experiences taught me that this journey is far more complex than simply “getting back to normal.” It involves healing physically, emotionally, and mentally, often in ways that aren’t talked about enough. That’s why I felt compelled to create a specialised C-section recovery programme—to fill the gaps and provide the support I wish I’d had.

The Unseen Challenges of C-Section Recovery

A C-section is a major abdominal surgery, yet many women are discharged from the hospital with little more than a leaflet on wound care and a few basic instructions. The reality is that recovery requires much more:

  • Physical Healing: Beyond scar management, C-section recovery impacts posture, core strength, and pelvic floor health.
  • Emotional Processing: For some, the experience of having a C-section can carry feelings of loss, failure, or trauma, especially if it was unplanned.
  • Lifestyle Adjustments: Juggling recovery while caring for a newborn can be overwhelming, especially with societal pressures to "bounce back."

I’ve lived these challenges firsthand. After my first C-section, which followed a labor that progressed to 9 cm with pre-eclampsia and a baby with sepsis, I struggled to connect with my body. At three years postpartum I experienced a breakdown of my nervous system, requiring years of psychotherapy. These experiences shaped me deeply and highlighted how intertwined physical and emotional recovery truly are.
